English as a Second Language (ESL) is an intensive program for boys entering Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Students in the program are mainstreamed into the regular school program in subjects like physical education, art, math, and science. As they gain English competency, they are placed in social studies and English.
With the intensive English classes this program provides, our ESL students are expected to receive diplomas within a year of or concurrently with the class they enter.
ESL Curriculum
The ESL program prepares all levels of international students for the mainstream Saint Louis School curriculum.
Beginning levels focus on a basic four skill agenda of instruction (Speaking and Listening, Grammar, Reading, and Writing). This four-skill curriculum exposes students to a wide range of useful vocabulary. The ESL program focuses on the individual language needs of high-intermediate to advanced students. Through a measured integration process, ESL students are given balanced exposure to the ESL program resources and the mainstream curriculum.
Student Population
Most international students enroll at Saint Louis School because of the strong ESL program and our reputation of a well disciplined, safe learning environment that develops good social and moral values.
Because Saint Louis is an "all boys" school, students can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere which enables them to concentrate on their school work in the classroom.
The Saint Louis international students population is made up of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean students, but any nationality is welcome. Only English is used in the ESL classroom by the students and the teacher.
