COURSE TITLE:  Leadership Education and Training

COURSE DESCRIPTION:   JROTC is a cooperative effort on the part of the Army and the school to provide secondary students an opportunity for total development.  It is a character and leadership development program that prepares students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as an American citizen. It is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline.

REQUIRED TEXT(S) & MATERIALS:
A.  Textbooks and required handout materials are provided by the JROTC Department at no charge to the cadets.
B.  Uniforms are issued on a hand receipt by the Department of the Army and cadets are responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of all issued items. Uniformswill be returned at the end of the school year or when a cadet drops from the course.  Cadet are financially responsible for lost/damaged items.  If uniform is not returned upon their departure, the Cadet will receive an incomplete grade until his/her uniform is returned and properly accounted for.

C.  Air Rifles and pellet rounds.  1SG Akuna, Army Instructor is the Range Officer In Charge (OIC) for all range firing;  all commands and instructions will come from 1SG Akuna or LTC Keomalu, Assistant Range OIC and  Senior Army Instructor.

D.  Incentives awards (medals, ribbons, trophies should cords and other accoutrements).

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens.

A.  PROGRAM OUTCOMES:  This program intends to teach cadets to:
a.  Maximize potential for success through learning and self-management.
b.  Develop leadership skills.
c.  Incorporate principles of mental and physical wellness into behaviors and decisions.
d.  Build effective relationships with peers, co-workers, and the community.
e.  Apply physical and political geography to building global awareness.
f.  Correlate the rights and responsibilities of citizenship to the purposes of thegovernment.
g.  Relate events inhistory to choices and responsibilities Americans have today.
h.  Characterize the role of the military and other national service organizations in building a democracy and maintaining peace in a democratic society.

B.  CORE ABILITIES: The JROTC Core abilities describe the broad, life-long skills that every cadet needs for success in all career and life roles. They are drawn from the over-all goals and values that drive the JROTC program.

a.  Build your capacity for life-long learning.
b.  Communicate using verbal, non-verbal, visual, and written techniques.
c.  Take responsibility for your actions and choices.
d.  Do your share as a good citizen in your school, community, country, and the world.
e.  Treat self and others with respect.
f.   Apply critical thinking techniques.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
A.  Maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement conduct and be of good moral character.  The cadet must require of himself/herself  honesty, self-reliance, and a sense of responsibility in the performance of requirements. He/She must show self-discipline and responsiveness to constituted authority through the observance of rules and regulations. Cadet may be disenrolled if these requirements are not met.

B.  Attend a minimum of one (1) school period a day for each school day.  The program is a one credit year course. Cadets may enter the course during the second semester for half a credit because subjects are taught by blocks.

C.  Participation in extra-curricular activities such as honor guard, color guard, drill team, rifle team, ranger detachment, and leadership camps are highly recommended and encouraged.

GRADING POLICY:             
- Academic Instruction: 50%  (Test - 40% and Quiz 10%)
- Leadership Application: 30% (Performance Activities)
- Home work/class assignment : 20%
- School and Community Service: Extra Credit

Grades are adjusted by the merits/demerits approved by the instructors at the end of the grading period.  Examinations are given after each subject.  There are no final exams.
