CLASS RULES, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

DAILY PROCEDURES:

  1. HAVE PLANNER OUT AND READY BEFORE ENTERING CLASS: parents on a daily basis should sign Planners.  I check for accuracy before your son leaves and will initial his planner daily.  It is, however, his responsibility to copy assignments from the board correctly.  If too many errors have occurred, I will ask him to stay after class to complete the corrections.
  2. READ THE BOARD for class information.  The things that we will be doing in class for the day will be written on the board.  You should get out the needed supplies and have them ready before class prayer.
  3. ASK QUESTIONS.  There are only two ways that I know that a student is having trouble.  One, if he gets every answer incorrect and two, if he asks questions.  Asking questions prevents frustration and failing grades.

WORK EXPECTATIONS:

  1. All work should be done in pencil.  Mistakes happen while you’re learning.  Pencil erase, pens don’t.
  2. All work should be neat.  It’s your work; take pride in doing your best.  Work should be done on a new, clean, not torn out, piece of paper. Work that does not meet this standard will be returned and done over.  This work will be considered late.
  3. Put your first and last name, date and assignment on your paper.  Work without your name on it will be thrown away.  This “Title Block” should be placed on the first three lines of the your paper. (top left)

RULE AND CONSEQUENCES:

All rules prescribed to in the Saint Louis School Student/Parent Handbook will be followed.  Additionally, I will address behavior that is either inappropriate or hinders the learning atmosphere of the class in general.  The fourth grade class has two standing rules:

1.      1.      BE READY.  This means you have your books and supplies, are in dress code and in your seat when prayer begins.

2.      2.      BE RESPECTFUL.  No swearing, put downs or abusive language.  No destroying or taking of other’s things.  You will live by the Golden Rule.

If you fail to follow these rules:

  1. You will be given a warning verbally and your name will be placed on the board.
  2. A check will be placed by your name and you will given up to a five minute timeout in a designated area of the room. (Parents will be notified through the Daily Planner.)
  3. A second check by your name and you will receive a lunch detention. (Either the principal of the Lower School or an assigned representative will give this detention.  Parents to be notified in accordance with school policy.)
  4. Upon the fourth violation in the same day, you will be either sent to the Lower School Counselor or the Dean of Lower School’s office depending upon severity of behavior.

GRADING:

Progress Reports: Assignments will be returned in a timely fashion.  Progress reports will be printed out and distributed bi monthly.  It will show assignments and scores for a two-week period.  These progress reports need to be signed and returned the following day.  A copy of the report will be given to you when it is returned with a parent signature. You may check your son’s progress at any time on line.  Your son will be given the password with the first few days of school.  If you would like to change this password please let me know.

Core Subjects: Mathematics, English, Hawaiian Studies and Science

Homework (30%): Homework will be assigned on a daily basis.  Your son is expected to write down homework assignments in his Planner even if he has completed these assignments during school.  Homework is posted at our class site, however, changes are sometimes made in class and what is in his assignment book should be the most accurate.  No homework is accepted early and it is encouraged for students to review the assignments with his parents.  All homework is graded on a five-point scale.

Class work (30%): Any work that is completed in its entirety in class will be considered class work.  This includes notes, planner usage and participation in discussions.

Tests and Quizzes (20%): You will be having tests and quizzes on a regular basis.  Tests will be scheduled and quizzes will usually be unannounced.  Tests will basically cover Units and quizzes help break a part more difficult sections.  All tests and quizzes will be sign by parent and returned the next day.

Projects (20%): All long term, multiple step assignments that require your son to show off his knowledge will fall into this category.  This will include, but is not limited to posters, oral presentations, research projects, and book reports.  Some assignments will be done in class; others will be done at home.

*For English the grading categories will differ.  To give clarification in your son’s strengths and weaknesses, the following weighted categories will be used: Reading Comprehension 30%, Writing 30%, Tests and Quizzes %20, and Projects 20%.

Art

Participation (80%): All work will be graded by completing assignments to the best of each student’s ability.  Exposure and participation is key in expanding knowledge and promoting student growth.

Tests and Quizzes (20%): These assessments will usually be performance based such as speeches and class presentations, however, short quizzes on specific content will also be given.

Late Work Policy: Assignments are sometimes misplaced, discarded or forgotten.  An assignment is considered late if it not ready to be turned in when asked for.  These late assignments will receive a grade no higher than a C.  You will have one day to make up this late work.  These missing assignments will be written down into your daily planner.   Late work for excused absences will not be marked down.  You will be given an appropriate amount of time to make up this work depending on the length of your absence.  If late work persists, further actions might include counseling, parent conferences, detentions, and or academic probation.

Cheating: Cheating of any type is unacceptable.  Copying homework, looking at other people’s tests, giving or receiving answers during tests will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.  The principal of the Lower School will notify parents.  Cheating will also earn you an automatic detention.
