GLOBAL LEARNING

What is Global Learning to Saint Louis?

Saint Louis School is unique in that it embraces a combination of its Hawaiian, Catholic, and American values. Starting in 1846, Saint Louis School's first 14 years of instruction was delivered in Hawaiian. Today, many of those Hawaiian values are still there embedded in its own unique culture with 63 percent of its population being Native Hawaiian while the rest represent a diverse mix of different ethnicities.

Christians make up the majority of students religiously, with Catholics representing near 40 percent of the population. As a Catholic Marianist School, students are taught the five characteristics of a Marianist Education, which can be summarized into the phrase "putting others before one's self" as Mary did as the primary educator of Jesus.

As an American school, Saint Louis School has a rich tradition of graduating men who risk their lives to serve their country either through joining the military, the police force, the fire department and more. Saint Louis School is the only high school in the U.S. with two cadet programs: a JROTC program that has been around for over 75 years and Civil Air Patrol program that has been in existence for six years. Both programs provide leadership and scholarship opportunities that leads to our graduates working internationally to serve others.

Global Learning at Saint Louis School challenges our students to take their understanding of who we are as people of Hawai'i and to use that information to compare and contrast ourselves with cultures and countries around the world. We do this through studying about others in books, online, traveling abroad and more. This process is actually supported in educational research. We learn when we can connect new learning to what we already know.

At Saint Louis School, our end goal is to graduate Saint Louis Men who according to our motto are "Mindful and Faithful" and live up to our vision that challenges our young men to go out there and change the world for the better. Whether they do so by making a difference in people's lives locally, nationally or internationally, Saint Louis Men take their God-given talents nurtured through the exposure of the 6 A's of our school's mission, and then uses those talents to improve society with a deep understanding of who they are, where they come from, and the world around them. Equipped with that knowledge and those skills they can be leaders who create unique solutions to the issues we face that are culturally sensitive, embracing diverse beliefs and values and will be more likely to take root and have a long lasting impact.

Whether you see our students traveling abroad, learning leadership skills as members of our JROTC, CAP cadet programs, LIFE Team, Student Council and more, we are committed to ensuring that they carry with them a balance of local, national and international perspectives that can help them to reach success no matter where they go in life.
